Today’s “throwback-thursday” features one of my most favorite food experiences from my year abroad in Scotland:
SCONES WITH CLOTTED CREAM AND JAM
Traditionally served as part of cream tea, or afternoon tea, with tea, clotted cream, and jam, these drops of golden goodness are to die for. In addition to the fact that Scotland has the highest percentage of redheads in the world, scones are one of my favorite things about Scotland. I was lucky enough to stumble upon what I believe is the cafe that makes the best scones EVER very early in my year abroad.
On Blackfriars Street off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh you will find the Edinburgh Larder. Not only do they serve amazing scones (best when you go early in the morning and they have just come out of the oven!), but their smoked salmon and eggs breakfast is also amazing, as are all theirs salads, soups and sandwiches. They use locally sourced ingredients, and a map on the wall of the cafe will tell you where in Scotland all their ingredients came from.
I always ordered my scones with clotted cream and their house made raspberry jam. The crust is just crispy enough, and the buttery crumbly middle just melts in your mouth. It is best served with a hot latte or pot of tea. As you can see, hardly any crumbs leftover.
I tried many scones during my year in the UK, but these scones from the Larder in Edinburgh were without a doubt the best. I did enjoy some of the scones I tried with dried fruit in them, and I even had some that were more savory than sweet. But these from the Larder were just so perfectly simple and delicious. I recommend to anyone passing through Edinburgh that they stop and indulge.
